Blankety Blank: awful & awesome
Ploughmans played Cranbourne at Broadfields on Saturday 22 July.
Either supply your own fillers or pick from the list at the bottom…
- The weather was _____ which meant a mutual decision to aim for 25 overs per side in an attempt to complete the match.
- The skipper was _____ to discover that he WAS the skipper. Upon asking who was the skipper the answer came back “you are”.
- The opposition won the toss and _____ to bat which was a bit of surprise to both teams.
- There were _____ footballers using the outfield for practice at the scheduled start time. Thank you Laney for helping to move them on.
- The track was as flat as a _____ - let us not forget that this is Broadfields. It made life interesting to say the least.
- Will Barras owns a car which could be described as _____. Already below strength we were not amused to learn that Will had broken down en route.
- Patel Snr. and Patdiwala were _____ by a great catch by McNee. After an opening stand of over a hundred we finally took a wicket off a ball by Reed.
- Crick added to our _____ - his timing was spot on with his fifty coming off around 20 balls.
- After completing his ton Patdiwala _____. It didn’t look like we would get him any other way: low, high, sideways – he hit it, usually to the boundary.
- McEvoy produced a _____ to put Patel Jnr. back in the hutch. A purely temporary respite but it gave us something to cheer.
- Down to a mere nine we thought that a target of 239 off 25 overs looked _____. I know the pros can chase 10 an over, could we?
The tea, beautifully prepared and presented by Dawn as usual, was highly praised by both teams and certainly lifted everyone’s spirits after a soggy first half. Back to the action …
- Lane perished to a _____ catch by Nicholls – theirs not ours. A bit of a difference from his heroics against Hendon Edgware three weeks before.
- Simkins’ batting was as _____ as his bowling was _____. We began to believe as he steamed along to a 24 ball fifty. After 10 overs – 76 runs!
- Then it went _____ as Simkins and Nicholls were both bowled by Patdiwala in his second over. His first had been a maiden.
- The _____ Jackson was next to fall to that man again as a forward defensive didn’t quite get to the pitch of the ball.
- McEvoy made the _____ scoring shot off Patdiwala before being caught by him off Patel Jnr.
- Reed played with his usual _____ for a valuable thirty in the process making the other scoring shot off Patdiwala.
- McNee was extremely _____ when Simkins, scoring while Wilkinson padded up, told him his current (and soon to be final) score. Next ball in fact.
- Brown, a very able stand-in keeper, was suspected of killing a cat after smashing a six into the gardens with a very _____ noise as it landed.
- Wilkinson faced _____ balls and failed to score off any them as we fell well short of the required total.
After the match finished the weather showed a sense of humour by giving us the best we had seen all afternoon – what a _____. In the end a good time was had by most, if not quite all. Thank you very much, Cranbourne.
PS The skipper found his promotion on his e-mail on Monday timed at 3:15 when he was at work until 5:00. Use the _____ telephone!
