Sunday 29th May

Sunday 29th of May saw the Men O’ Plough travel the short distance to neighbouring West London club, Northfields, for what was to be the farewell game for club favourite Aussie, Andy Ratyna, who’s shortly to return down-under after several years in the land of his betters. Accordingly, he was to skipper the match. He won the toss and elected to take the field.

It was to prove an interesting afternoon, with Ploughman’s facing stiff competition not just from Northfields, but also internal chicanery from erstwhile club captain, Tom Lonnen, who consistently conspired against his team mates, and whose underhanded attempts at sabotage would eclipse the combined efforts of Judas Iscariot, Brutus, and Aldrich Ames, in terms of callous perfidiousness. More of which later.

Scott Hoskin and I opened the bowling against Northfields first pair, Elmes and Dalton. Left-hander Elmes looked set to do well, taking advantage of a few loose balls from both Bob and myself and posting a quickfire 31, which included 6 fours, before holing out to a devastating delivery from me which was neatly taken by the peerless Nasser Khan at short mid-wicket. With that came the first bowling changes and Bob and I were replaced by Mike Magill and Nick Palmer. Northfields added just 2 more runs before Magill claimed the scalp of 2nd opener Dalton (8), who we’d managed to keep relatively quiet. A good spell from both ends ensued with Nick adding the wicket of Northfield’s number 4, a rather smart take behind by Paddy Gledhill who had a typically solid game, with only a couple of byes, and one dropped catch that was quite clearly the fault of Tom Lonnen, who seemed to deliberately distract the keeper at a critical moment.

It was at this point that A.Rat, against the advice of the rest of the team, decided to invite Lonnen in from exile at long leg, to have a go at bowling. It’s fair to say that in days gone by, Lonnen has occasionally proved a useful bowler, but on this day he didn’t try particularly hard and only picked up two wickets, both courtesy of superb catches, the first a low take at short mid-on by Mike Magill to dismiss batsman number 3; the second at slip, by the outstanding Richard Buckley, who is not only one of the clubs finest cricketers, but also the best looking, best dressed, and most erudite.

It was at this point that a rumour began to circulate in the field, that Northfields, well known for their excellent teas, were going to be serving doughnuts at half time. A.Rat had earlier tried the left arm of Sav Gatfield who struggled to find his usual form for a couple of overs and was replaced by the portly skipper himself, doughnuts in mind, with Hoskin coming back for a second spell at the other end. Between the two of them, with token support from Lonnen, they cleaned up the last 6 wickets with no further runs being scored off the bat. Yes, that was the last 6 wickets, 4 ducks and two goldies, with Ratty finishing the innings with a creditable 2 wkts for 7 runs off 4 overs; Bob 3/25/6; Judas Lonnen 2/20/6; Magill 1/22/5; Palmer 1/28/5; Gatfield 0/23/2; and myself 1/19/5.

37 extras meant that Northfields left the field, 157 all out.

Tea was a most pleasant affair which included vegetable samosas, chicken nuggets, onion bhajis, and that meat loaf stuff you get at Asda that’s made of 57% chicken skin. We also had some of those little iced sponge fairy cakes with the dob of cream on the top. No doughnuts. Packets of McCoys crinkle cut crisps in a variety of flavours were also supplied but nobody seemed to get any of those. The smart money is on them ending up in Lonnen’s kit bag. Thus sated, the magnificent Richard Buckley settled down near the boundary for some well deserved beauty sleep as Ploughman’s openers Gledhill and Jackson took up arms.

Unfortunately it wasn’t our day with the bat. Paddy failed to get off the mark, caught behind off a great ball from Northfields opener, Egan, and was replaced by Nass. Jacko put up some typically industrial resistance, eventually falling LBW to Egan for 19 and was replaced by Tom Lonnen. Nasser followed shortly afterwards caught behind for 8.

This brought the superb Richard Buckley to the crease and I had the honour of umpiring this section of the game. He held up the bowler at one point. My fault. I was touching my hat in a distracting manner, a mistake that I shall not make again. When Rich was at my end I enquired of him as to his form, he said he felt great and that there were some good runs in him. And so there were. Richard scored an absolutely flawless 7 runs before being caught behind off Hugill. Sav Gatfield took his place.

Tom Lonnen actually scored quite well, but his innings included a straight drive which sent the ball into orbit never to be seen again. Lost ball. Typical of Lonnen’s disruptive attitude to this game of cricket.

Next to fall was Sav Gatfield tagged by Egan, I believed, just in front of his off stump. Lonnen appealed along with Northfields, telling me “that was absolutely plum, give it, give it!”. My initial theory thus reinforced, I raised my finger to dismiss Sav, a decision which in hindsight I greatly regret. Sorry Sav.

Lonnen eventually went down, caught behind for 36, and the following combined efforts of A.Rat (2); Magill (2); Palmer (5); Hoskin (4); and your correspondent (2), saw the Plough reach a disappointing total of 108, losing by 49 runs.

The action moved to the pub where we were joined by Arv and his missus, Britto, Jacko’s girlfriend Helen, and her parents. Drink was taken, and A.Rat bid a fond farewell with 6 pints of lager and 6 whisky chasers.

You’ve been a true club star Ratty, and a great mate to all at Ploughman’s Cricket Club. On behalf of everyone, good luck and good health in Oz. You will always be welcome in London.

The evening culminated with Helen returning sheepishly to the table with a note in her hand. She admitted that “someone” had made a pass at her in the pub and given her their number. On inspection of the note the number was familiar to us all.

Tom Lonnen was last seen running out of London like a scalded cat, with Jacko waving “The Weapon” in close pursuit.
Match scorecard

Saturday 28th May

Ploughmans turned up on a cloudy day with rain a real threat in confident mood. Skipper Noodle elected to bat, backed by his batsmen to continue the good batting form that has been evidenced to good effect for much of the season to date. Unfortunately, the start didn't go to plan and Britto was out the last ball of the first over for 2. Pup was out the second ball of the next over after hitting the first ball for 4. With the score on 6 for 2 we were all scratching our heads why we had batted first...?! Anyway, in came Hiley for his first game of the season and immediately fell into his usual verve and vigour hitting anything loose to the boundary. However, this revival was to be short-lived as a good nut from Duffy accounted for Hiley with the score only in the mid-20s. In came big Benjy Hynes to stem the flow of wickets with Noodle. Both looked cautious of attacking anything realising further wickets falling then could open the flood gates. After a few uneventful overs, the score crept up and both started to become more expansive in their shot selectioin, particularly Ben who took well to the change of bowler when YWCC brought their spinner on. Unfortunately whilst a mini recovery had been staged, Noodle was out LBW and the score was only still in the mid-40s. At 50 for 4 PCC were reeling. Perv and Student came and went, also and a score of 100 was looking an optimistic prospect. Rich Phillips with Ben got however got some runs on the board, with both hitting bad balls when they came. However, Rich was, and then Ben fell caught at cover with the score in the mid-90s. Despite their best efforts Coxy and Wilko and Puff managed haul PCC over the 100-mark, at 101.

Not a great score, but belief was had that PCC could escape the jaws of defeat by bowling YWCC, given YWCC had been bowled out for 84 2 weeks prior. PCC set about this aim with Ben and Perv and bowled bowled with agression and accuracy and were rewarded with early wickets. At 24 for 3 PCC were rampant, and the possible win looked a real likelihood. After a few lusty blows from their opener an LBW decision was turned down was to be his downfall but not in the conventional way - he twisted his knee and had to limp off. 4 down now, and a real possibility.

Alas it was not to be and PCC only manager to get 1 more wicket. YWCC's number 4 batted well for his 50, although he had his luck also early in his innings with a couple of half chances going down. Attempting to keep the bowling fresh, and trying to prize a wicket, Noodle brought Yorkshire on and was rewarded eventually with a sharp caught behind courtest of Pup. But this was all too late, at this stage, as YWCC edged closer to their target.

In all, whilst the result was a disappointing one, positives can still be taken from the way we fought in the field and got quick wickets. Intensity and energy levels were high at times; but it was always evident that disappointment from the batting display was still lingering. Should we have been more attacking in field to get that extra wicket or 2 to keep the flow of wickets coming? Perhaps. But the wariness of avoiding the boundaries that YWCC kept getting was also there, and to balance the two out was difficult. Ultimately the game was lost in the batting display, so no real fault can lie with our fielding.

Match scorecard

Sunday 15th May

Nasser Khan remained in the side despite controversy surrounding his involvement in the GSK Premier League. James Jackson came into the side after originally being named 12th Man whilst Andrew Ratyna was a late inclusion after not being selected in the initial squad.

Old Haberdasher’s won the toss and immediately elected to bat on a wicket one would expect to favour the batsman, with an extremely short boundary on the eastern side of the ground. Conditions remained overcast throughout the day, although memories of last years wash out remained etched in the minds of both teams.

Anzac’s Hoskins and Ratyna opened the bowling with the first wicket falling in Hoskins second over. The wickets continued to fall relatively frequently with Old Haberdashers on the ropes at 56 for 7. Hoskins manage to extract some life out of a fairly dull wicket whilst the autumn of Ratyna’s Ploughman career is looking more like an Indian summer. Hoskins finished 8 overs, tew maidens, 12 for tew. Ratyna’s figures 8 overs, tew maidens 31 for 5.

There was a twist however, and Old Haberdasher’s tail wagged putting on another 64 for the loss of just one wicket. In scenes reminiscent of the Border era, Captain and Chairman Robert Cox brought himself on taking the final tew wickets in his spell of 10 deliveries whilst conceding only one run. The innings concluded with Cox on a hat-trick.

Sha Hussein was the other wicket taker. It appears that his trademark beanie is now paying some dividends. The beanie will surely be reviewed by the ICC with its streamlining qualities allowing Hussein to bowl with some extra pace and zip. It was easily the fastest I’ve seen him bowl this summer.

In the end Old Haberdasher’s were all out for 120 in the 25th over.

Ploughmans must have been looking for a quick win however Old Haberdashers had other ideas. Their bowling side was certainly a few levels above their batting side. Parks and Khan opened the batting with Khan falling in the 3rd over.

Parks provided a stable platform however his fellow Ploughman did little to assist, with the next 5 batsman not being able to reach double figures. Parks was out shortly before the tea break after a well made 24, with the score on 63.

Enter Scott Hoskins at number 8. His words were picked up via the stump mike at the tea-break “We got these guys out for 120. I’m not going to let these $£#*! win from here”. And indeed Hoskins was true to his word. Supported by the Gledhill, a man who’s own technique has been honed through years of defensive cricket, Hoskins brought Ploughmans to the brink of victory, making 44 off only 32 balls faced. His portfolio of stokes resulted in three 4’s and three 6’s. Gledhill went on to score the winning runs.

In summing up Ploughmans won by three wickets in the 30th over.

Saturday 14th May

It was a bright and breezy League Week 2 when CRS Cardinals came to play.

After a delayed toss Dynamite put CRS in hoping for a quick finish so he could get home for the Eurovision. Ketchup got first use of the new cherry and removed both openers for one each after much playing & missing. Puff bowled uphill with his usual fire and usual lack of luck / edges / wickets. Karmacharya and Ph Raeburn were building steadily - mixing “playing & missing” with “good shot” to add 45 - which was getting frustrating until Perv broke up the pairing [good catch Mule] to open the door – through which rushed Interesting (after a boundary pee!) getting Ph with a back leg LBW. Horriss threatened to take the CRS innings the distance but was largely denied the strike as Perv and Yorkshire took the next five wickets for only 58. After changing ends Perv bowled a tempter to Horris which Puppy caught and the innings was over as Horriss walked – very sporting.

The highlight of tea (for many, at least) was the discovery of just how tasty the honeycomb cream biscuits were: nice one, Asda.

Stevo and Puppy faced the new ball and put on 60 in nine overs including some cracking boundaries, an all-run five and a BIG six, until Pup skied another and door abuse ensued (again). Dynamite looked to be leading PCC home until a no-bouncer caught him out for 15 (two of which he nicked from Stevo ) so it was left to Beanie and Stevo to get PCC home with lots of shots over the infield towards the long boundary and much running.

Nice to see: Puff again; Perv back on bowling form; Puppy back on door abuse; Interesting back on parking duty (ask Mule about that one); good spirit from CRS. Thank you one and all (even Buckers who protected his batting and bowling averages all day).

In all honesty, though, the post-match drinks at Old Actonians exposed PCC to a far more exciting finish.

Ploughmans finish runners-up in 2010 cup final

PCC fought hard but lost a closely fought final by 4 wickets to a determined and well drilled Expatriates side. The game ebbed and flowed, and was genuinely very exciting – it was therefore a great experience, not just for the players, but also the army of PCC supporters that came along.

Final score PCC 188-8 off 45 overs, Expatriates 189-6
