Waking up in the morning to the sound of rain is somewhat therapeutic, as some would say. I strongly disagree. Mustering up what little courage we have, we all leave our warm homes in the hope of a cricket match. Aman, Leo, and Dom are part of the No. 3 bus crew.

“What even is the point of this?” says Dom, looking at Aman’s semi-damp coat.

Slowly but surely, we make our way to the G.

At the G, there are rumours of fielding drills after last week's shenanigans. Aman, being one of the culprits, slowly dodges the conversation and slithers towards the pitch to help take the covers off.

We take one look at the pitch, and it's a no-brainer: bowl first. That said, the Corinthians skipper wins the toss and elects to bat. It is the first of many bizarre decisions made by the opposition captain.

Ritik and CRS start us off strongly. CRS with his outswingers and Ritik, as always, hooping it in. Ritik claims his first victim with a vicious inswinging delivery, sending the stumps flying.

At the other end, CRS is visibly red-faced and enraged with the opposition skipper, who is also umpiring. Three huge LBW appeals are reluctantly turned down. After one of them, Sean runs down and asks, “What is it missing?”

The umpire replies, “Missing leg.”

To which Sean rightly responds, “Yes, it is missing leg, because it's hitting middle stump mate!!”

Anyway, we manage to keep our cool. By now, dark clouds have gathered all around the G.

Replacing CRS is none other than Puff, who steams in and claims the No. 3 and No. 4 batsmen. Both are caught beautifully by Aman and CRS.

Replacing Ritik from the other end is Aman. After the first couple of deliveries, the rain becomes noticeably heavier, and one of the batsmen is not having any of it. He stands there complaining, surrounded by some very eager Ploughmen who just want to get on with the game. Just to clarify, he is wearing neither a helmet nor a hat.

After a heated discussion, we carry on. The very next ball, he misses a straight one from Aman and is sent on his way. Well deserved, some would say, for wasting five minutes of precious dry time out in the middle. By now, it is pouring down, and the covers are back on.

After a 20-minute delay, we head back out, with Aman fresh off a wicket and five balls remaining in the over. First ball after the break, the new batsman once again misses a straight one. In his defence, the ball swings in and sneaks between bat and pad.

Aman, now on a hat-trick, steams in with another in-swinger that the batsman barely manages to get a bat to. It takes the inside edge and clips the leg stump. To our dismay, the bails stay put, and Aman is denied his first Plough hat-trick.

At the other end, Puff is replaced by Dom Scott, who, very early in his spell, is not bonding particularly well with the new umpire. The reason? Yet another LBW appeal ignored by the opposition. The explanation? “No one else in this league gives LBWs, so why on earth should we?” Dom is not an amused man.

We polish off the opposition for 93 with Aman picking up his first fiver for the club. All in all, a very strong bowling performance.

Umar at this point has injured his shoulder and requested the skipper to bat down the order. Poor him!

He settles down to score as Barron and Sean begin the chase. Sean, as usual, is looking good and negotiates the first over nicely. Corinthians start well, with one of their opening bowlers clipping Sean’s top of off stump. A very good nut indeed. These are not easy conditions to bat in. It is dark and gloomy.

In comes Angus, who, as always, looks solid. He plays a sumptuous square cut for four. The very next over, the Corinthians opening bowler bags another wicket, producing a peach of a delivery to Angus. He edges it straight to the keeper, who takes an excellent one-handed catch to his right.

At the crease now are Leo and Barron. The score is 29 for 2. Leo somehow manages to get through the opening bowlers, while Barron, at the other end, is going berserk, dispatching anything in his arc with utter disdain. There are powerful cover drives, towering straight sixes, and excellent running between the wickets.

The second and third change bowlers for Corinthians are nowhere near as effective as the opening pair, especially with Barron seeing it like a football and Leo expertly anchoring the innings from the other end.

Barron brings up a superb half-century, and alongside Leo, who finishes unbeaten on 12, comfortably guides us home in the 20th over. Not only do we manage to secure the win, but we also ensure that Corinthians leave without a single bonus point. That feels particularly satisfying!

With the game done and dusted, thoughts quickly turn to a long, warm shower, a couple of well-earned beers, and then a curry at Khans. What a way to round off the day!
