Sutton Challengers CC - 4th XI (H)

Drew Withers

Turning up to the DSG with exquisite sunshine overhead (it never rains at the DSG), Ploughmans 2nd XI lost the toss and were sent in on a green looking wicket at the nursery ground against Sutton.

With the writer triggered early (plum by all accounts), Butlin and Umar set rebuilding and both epitomise class when they bat. Watching the straight ones carefully, leaving the wider ones and then putting away the short ones. The two combined for a fantastic partnership for over 100 with Butlin bringing up a well compiled 50 batting well to leave the plough at 116 for 1.

Shortly after drinks Butlin was dismissed for 55. As the great Niraj tailor would say, one brings two and that proved to be the case here as Umar departed for 39. And as the wickets fell Sutton’s lines tightened considerably and it became difficult to up the ante.

The plough did their best and new Plough George Stanley came in and hit some smacking boundaries along with skipper Leo as the Plough looked to up the run rate.

As the plough took chances, wickets started to fall and credit to Sutton who bowled well and took their catches. Also credit to their captain as well who withdrew Sutton’s appeal for a run out after AJ fell mid pitch.

Some late impetus from Lonsdale and Ainslie saw the plough end up on 178 from their 40 overs which seemed about par.

In reply, Rumford and Sons and Lonsdale opened up and to say they bowled brilliantly would be an understatement. Wicket in the first over to a sumptuous catch from George at point off Rumford set the tone early. One followed two as Dan picked up his 2nd in as many overs. Some of his deliveries were unplayable. At the other end Oli was unlucky not to pick up a wicket as he clean bowled their top order only for it to be called a no-ball.

Benny Cobbett then came on and bowled fantastically well. He bowled 8 overs straight in tandem with Dan to stranglehold Sutton‘s top order and reduce them to five wickets down at drinks.

Just when Sutton were looking for some relief, skipper Leon Parks threw AJ Haque the ball to bowl his hooping in swingers. It ended up being a mismatch as he picked up 3 wickets, along with a couple more for Benny C who both finished with 3 wickets each (along with Dan). Elmo came on to help finish up as Sutton fell well short, bowled out for 90 after 27.1 overs.

Great result for the 2s and big win with the season ahead.
