Wooburn Narcovians (A)

Drew Withers

Wooburn Narkovians Cricket Club marks the first fixture of the year in the Chiltern hills. A beautiful setting where the cricketing whispers of a young Leo Connolly were first heard.

- The cards were dealt and the plough took to the field in overcast but pleasant conditions. Fred Gumpert marking the occasion with some splendid sideline beers.
- A strong start from Wooburn but the plough spirits were high with Liam and Drew acting like lion tamers, pushing their overs through. All plough bowlers putting their names into the hat and contributing to an effort to restrict an attacking opposition. Highlights of the plough bowling innings have to go to resolute Paul Hynes, with two stunning catches in close.
- The Wooburn innings drew to a close setting a target of 177 to chase. Between innings a few keen ploughmen were spotted by the bar, after some hard grafting in the field, and to muster some well needed dutch courage for what was anticipated to be a challenging 40 overs to come.
- It was never in doubt. The plough took to the crease like men who have spent the winter longing for the sound of leather on willow, and a good hard thrashing. Buttlin and Britto were purposeful and precise, but both fell sooner than were deserved. Hynes looked strong and eager, but tipped his foot over the line for a premature stumping.
- Eagerness persists, and anchors will be heavy. CRS wrote expletives on his knuckles before the innings - there was no chance of him getting out. An excellent performance with the ball followed by an even more impressive finish with the bat and 41 to his name.
- Maxi doing Max Gumpert things. 64 from 34 makes for fine reading, but what I was watching was definitely more explicit than anything pure. You'd hope that the children weren't watching when Max swiped an offie for a 6, which Fred said would have been a 6 on any ground!
- a wonderful and very convincing win from Ploughmans CC (Earl's XI).
- Ball of the day: Duray Pretorius for a wicket taking half tracker, which ruined Wooburn number 7's Saturday.
- Catch of the day: Paul Hynes diving catch in short mid off.
- Shot of the day (disputed by Chris Butlin): Max Gumpert hike into the river, 300 yrds away
