At one of the fixtures of the season at Chobham with a picturesque church on one boundary and fields of wheat fit for Theresa may on the other, Ploughmans opened the batting with Mr Jagerbomb himself Rahul Nair and Michael 'Scants' Scantlebury. With the dude himself scants sweeping their opening spinners for 4 it looked set to be a good innings before disaster struck. Rahul trapped leg before.
Umar as the next man in though meant confidence stayed high, but his new strategy of not drinking meant he was early on some incredibly slow bowling. I have seen tractors holding up 3 miles of traffic move faster than the ball was reaching the batsmen, making it very difficult to know which shot to play. This theme continued throughout the innings.
Skipper Parks helped stabilise the innings briefly before Michael was also trapped in front, leaving us in a dire situation just 5 or so overs in.
Azharul "shots fired" Haque was determined to fight however. He looked very solid and allowed us to at least bat some overs, unfortunate that some very good shots found a fielder. Before long with the pressure building, a cut shot caught the top edge and he was caught at point.
With the Plough shaking, and in his last game, it was time for a typical Tom Lonnen performance. Himself and Leon stabilising before slowly accelerating the score. A lovely lofted straight drive, a couple of beautiful back foot punches through the covers and he got to 34, with good support from Leon, then being left dry as the rest of the wickets slowly fell for not much. Trying to carry the scoring pressure himself he was eventually caught.
The innings was finished off by a couple of beautiful shots from Sham, helping us break the 100 barrier. Ending on 109.
Turning straight around to get the game done with before the scheduled rain, we looked to get a quick start. The drizzle had started but couldn't dampen the spirits as Lonnen steamed in, legs pumping like Broady, first ball just hopping over off stump. A tight and uncomfortable first over passed.
Bisi took the other end, bowling an uncomfortable line with some left arm cutters. The pressure of the chase clearly clouding the batsman mind, there was a horrible mix up and the epitome of calm Ihtesham calmly gets it into the bowlers end for a good run out.
Next ball and it cuts away from the batsman clattering his middle and off stump. A team hattrick was on, and nearly secured with the batsman narrowly avoiding snicking off.
Plough right on top and Bisi and Lonnen both keeping it tight, we reached the 5th over with the score 10-2. Lonnen decided if he's not gonna play for a year, may have 2 season worthy wickets in one over. The first a slower ball yorker taking their handy left handers off stump. A beautiful wicket to take, only to be usurped by the next. A rocket that pitched on middle, nibbled away and hit the top of off, dispatching the ball over the boundary for 6.
The oppo reeling from a strong Plough start, the covers were called for. 11-4 off 5 leaving then feeling their pride was hurt.
The sad end of this game being an abandoned match, but I think all who played know we can take a moral victory from this.
