There is nothing quite like a good old-fashioned thumping to keep a cricket team grounded. Much like the historic crash landing of the Pound Sterling, PCC experienced a swift and dramatic drop to earth on Sunday at Morden CC.

Morden has always provided a rich backdrop for memorable PCC fixtures—who could forget the 2019 thriller featuring Tom Lonnen’s match-winning half-century for PCC alongside Max Gumpert’s superb century for Morden, or 2020’s masterclass where Simon Carson ripped through their lineup with a 5-wicket haul?

This installment, played in fantastic spirits throughout with congenial company mid-way and at the end of the game, ultimately belonged to the hosts—though not without plenty of fight from PCC.

Bright Start with the Ball & Field
PCC actually started the match exceptionally well in the field, making great early use of the conditions. Dom Scott and Ean Smith set a fantastic tone with an impressive opening partnership.

Dom, in his final appearance before moving on to pastures new, put in a classic all-round swansong: taking a wicket, holding onto a catch, and chipping in with a run. Opening alongside Ean, the pair put Morden under early pressure.

From there, the entire unit fired:

McGurn: Fantastic in the infield, keeping energy levels high with lively chat directed at both teammates and opposition alike. Channelling his inner Ollie Robinson, his seam bowling was absolute quality and a pleasure to watch from afar.
Kinger: Capping off an outstanding first season with PCC, Kinger bowled with fantastic economy. Alongside skipper Grayzer, the pair kept things exceptionally tight—maintaining a steady economy rate worthy of the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Joseph: Showing real promise as a new recruit, Joseph bowled crisp seam-up, beating the bat several times and backing it up with excellent work in the outfield.
Ajay: Served up a total "Yes Chef" performance with his off-spin, keeping the run rate down and suffocating the scoring.
Angus: The absolute pick of the bowlers. Transitioning brilliantly from off-spin to medium pace, Angus produced a clinical display that Morden’s tailenders simply could not dispatch. He walked away with a thoroughly deserved 5-wicket haul and earned prime fantasy captain credentials in the process!
Alex G-W: Excellent wicketkeeping, especially on a very difficult pitch with variable bounce -> Great to see him back playing cricket and great company off the field also.
Despite the strong start, PCC couldn't quite contain a couple of Morden's middle-order batters, who executed a strong rebuilding job to set a daunting target.

Morden's Attack & A Tail-End Lesson
In reply, PCC met a Morden bowling attack that was ruthless in its execution. Fresh off a Saturday 6-fer for their 1st XI, Morden’s star opening bowler put on an absolute masterclass, dismantling "castles" with surgical precision—arguably the best opening spell seen on a Sunday in a very long time. The change bowlers offered no respite either, giving away virtually no freebies—including a towering pace bowler who was channelling his inner Steve Harmison to full effect.

The top order collapsed under the heat. McGurn was very unlucky with the bat, but continues to be our reliable go-to opener who brings immense strength to our Sunday lineup alongside Dom, Angus, and Grant. Grant himself looked very promising early in his innings, only to fall victim to an absolute snorter of a ball—a cruel, low-bouncing good length delivery that wiped out his stumps.

The highlight of the run chase came right at the end with a gritty 10th-wicket stand between Skipper Liam and Dinesh. The pair put together PCC's highest partnership of the innings, teaching the top order a stern lesson in resistance and application. Watching the tail wag so valiantly, Del dryly suggested with a chuckle that PCC might want to reverse the batting order for the next match!

Mind Games on the Pitch
The WhatsApp build-up saw Skipper Grayzer roll out a unique tactical masterplan for the opening two overs: complete, eerie silence. “No words, no encouragement, no reaction to anything... weird them out.” By over three, the plan was to “get into them.” While the mental tactics were peak Sunday league innovation, Morden’s middle order held firm.

Boundaryside Support & Top-Tier Hospitality
Win or lose, Sunday cricket is about the community and the tea, and both were outstanding.
