An Exciting Encounter at Ripley

A Picturesque Start in the Surrey Hills
The Ripley Cricket Ground, nestled within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty just off the A3, provided a breathtaking backdrop for a classic Surrey fixture. With its rich history dating back to the mid-1700s, the venue brimmed with charm, and the atmosphere was lively from the first ball—thanks to effervescent locals and the promise of a legendary tea.

First Innings: The Battle of the Crease
The game began with Ripley’s openers embracing a bold "Bazball" approach, aiming to seize control early. Our team, however, responded with determination and resilience.

George, patrolling the covers with the spirit of Jonty Rhodes, impressed with remarkable athleticism and quick reflexes that consistently prevented boundaries. This defensive prowess was a delight for our skipper, Grayzer, who excelled at maintaining morale throughout the demanding 35 overs. On a ground famed for its challenging layout, Grayzer kept everyone motivated and focused.

Harry Wright delivered an outstanding performance with the new ball, bowling with disciplined precision and holding the runs in check under pressure. He certainly deserved more wickets for his efforts—well bowled, mate.

"Bisi" brought control to the mid-innings, channelling Nathan Bracken with tight line and length, and picked up a well-earned wicket. The scoreboard, however, didn’t quite reflect how often he beat the bat.

Callum, Grayzer, and Greg all worked diligently on a deck that clearly favoured the batters, making their efforts all the more commendable.

Despite our tight bowling, a few dropped catches proved costly—chances that might have been snapped up as quickly as late-night kebabs! These missed opportunities allowed Ripley’s middle order to flourish, led by Tom. His masterful century echoed Joe Root’s Ashes heroics last summer, pushing the required run rate above seven an over by the break. Off the field, Tom was a top bloke and a leader behind the stumps.

The Tea Break
If points were awarded for hospitality, Ripley would surely top the league. The tea service in Level 1 of the clubhouse was exceptional, featuring quiche, cakes, and sandwiches that provided the perfect refuel for our squad ahead of a challenging chase.

The Chase: Tons, Fifties, and the Final Overs
Facing a steep target, our top order rose to the occasion. Ean, having spent the off-season "living in the nets," impressed with superb pull shots and cover drives—the best we’ve seen from him so far.

Suri delivered the innings of a lifetime. After telling the skipper he’d score a ton—echoing Root’s promise to Stokes—he followed through with a brilliant century. His knock formed the heart of our chase, blending aggressive lofted drives with disciplined defence.

Leon, our veteran wicketkeeper, provided the perfect support. He anchored the final stages with a calculated half-century, showing how to build a base before accelerating. He finished with a "red inker," though the winning runs just eluded him in a nail-biting finish.

Final Thoughts
Although we suffered a narrow defeat, the quality of cricket was outstanding, and the match was played in excellent spirit. We extend our thanks to Ripley CC for their fantastic hospitality and a high-quality contest.

Lastly, the club bids a fond farewell to Jo Hockings, who is heading to Italy for new adventures. You leave with our very best wishes—Arrivederci, Jo!
