Add in a shimmering heat haze and conditions better suited to tumbleweed than swing bowling, and it was a proper Spaghetti Western setting. Unfortunately for Ploughmans, Addington 1743 CC proved more than comfortable in the heat.

After losing the toss, Ploughmans' new-ball pairing of Ben and Damon Greeney produced a superbly disciplined and testing opening spell. Both found excellent areas from the outset, creating a string of chances and half-chances that, on another day, could easily have left the visitors wobbling and running for cover. Ben bowled his allocation in one sharp spell, finishing with a deserved wicket courtesy of a smart piece of wicketkeeping from Alex Gordon-Walker, who put in a brilliant shift behind the pegs all afternoon.

Instead, Addington weathered the early storm and gradually began to cash in as the ball softened, despite some extremely enthusiastic ball polishing from Greg.

The visitors' innings was built around an outstanding 97 from Rehman, who took a particular liking to Ploughmans' collection of twirlery men, sending more than a few deliveries on extended sightseeing tours of DSG.

One bowler who refused to wilt in the heat was Harry Wright, whose accurate spell brought control just as the innings threatened to totally gallop away over the hills and deserved more than one wicket. At the other end, Greg Swaby struck with just his second ball before enduring what can only be described as a difficult couple of overs, with the Addington batsmen treating him rather like an all-you-can-hit buffet.

Cricket, however, has a habit of evening itself out. Swaby had the last laugh, eventually dismissing the well-set Rehman just three runs short of his century before picking up two more wickets in quick succession to finish with an eye-catching four-wicket haul and considerably healthier-looking figures than had once seemed likely, supported with smart catching from Damon & the skipper.

Leo also claimed an important wicket, while the opening bowlers deserved far greater reward than the scorebook ultimately gave them. Raza marked his Ploughmans debut with an encouraging spell, showing control despite the unforgiving conditions, as every bowler searched for answers on the baked surface.

Set 265 to win, Ploughmans knew they would need something special.
Tom Merilaht led from the front with a gritty and determined 38, including a huge straight six, showing plenty of composure against a disciplined attack, while Captain Daley added 10 before Alex Gordon-Walker and Leo unfortunately both fell as wickets began to tumble against an extremely disciplined Addington seam and swing attack.

Ben Millard-Sadler battled hard for 12, while another highlight of the chase came from debutant Raza, whose confident 19 showed plenty of guts and promise. On a day when runs were hard-earned and the target was disappearing over the horizon, he looked composed with bat in hand and can take plenty of encouragement from an impressive first outing in Ploughman's colours.

Unfortunately, Addington's attack never allowed any meaningful partnerships to develop. George Mitchell was unable to get going, while Damon Greeney looked to counterattack before falling. Harry Wright, Dave Yates and Greg Swaby all dug in as best they could, but the innings eventually closed on 114, handing the visitors a 150-run victory.

Despite the scoreline, there were plenty of positives to take. The new-ball spell from Ben and Damon deserved far greater reward, Harry's control and guile stood out on a difficult day for the bowlers, Greg recovered brilliantly to finish with four wickets, and Raza impressed in all facets of the game on debut. Most pleasing of all, nobody dropped their heads. The effort in the field never wavered, the energy remained high throughout, and there was lashings of esprit de corps on display from first ball to last.

On a day when the Nursery resembled the set of a Spaghetti Western, Addington rode off into the sunset with the spoils. Ploughmans, meanwhile, dusted themselves down, tipped their hats, and will be hoping for greener pastures—and perhaps a little more assistance from Lady Luck, next weekend.

Post-script: Cricket is about far more than what happens between 1pm and 7pm. A great show of club spirit saw many of the side head over to The Hollies after the match to support the other Ploughmans XI as they reached the conclusion of their fixture. Win, lose or draw, that's what club cricket is all about.
